Chapter Twenty-Three

Sipping a cup of coffee, Mackenzie watched the sunrise through the apartment’s windows. She’d lain awake most of the night, unable to sleep, and had finally gotten up at five thirty, abandoning any thought of sleep.

“Morning.”

Turning, she saw Lexie heading for the kitchen, her shuffling gait reminding Mackenzie of the zombies on one of her favorite TV shows. The half shuffle, half stumble gait made her chuckle. No matter how hard she tried, Lexie wasn’t a morning person.

“What’s on the schedule for today?”

Lexie gave an unintelligible grunt, and stuck a pod into the coffee maker. “Too early.”

“That’s because you didn’t come back until late.” Mackenzie watched the wash of color spread across her friend’s cheeks, and chuckled. “Wanna tell me where you were, or who you were with? Or should I guess?”

“Shaddup.”

Chuckling, she walked over and perched on the edge of a barstool, and set her cup on the counter. “You finally get things figured out with Bas?”

“I’m such an idiot.”

“Well, I’ve always known that.” She chuckled when Lexie pitched a kitchen towel at her head, catching it one-handed, and watched Lexie add cream and sugar to her cup. “Finally opened your eyes and realized what you wanted was right in front of you?”

“I finally admitted to myself that I’d been using his age as a roadblock to keep from getting closer. In the end, I took a leap of faith and told him how I felt.”

Mackenzie lowered the mug she’d lifted halfway to her mouth. “You told him you love him?”

“No! Yes. Ugh. I didn’t say the actual words. But I admitted he was the reason I came back all those years ago—and that he was the reason I stayed away so long.”

She stopped talking, and Mackenzie couldn’t resist throwing the towel back at her. “You can’t stop there. What did he say?”

“He already knew. He wants me to give us a chance. Despite the age difference, and the fact his brother is a good friend, I want this, Mack. I want to see if the pull I feel—that we both feel—is more than lust or physical attraction. Before he was too young, and I wasn’t ready for anything except my schooling and my career. But now? We’re both at different places in our lives, so we’re going to take it slow. See where it leads.”

“Good. Did you sleep with him?” Mackenzie laughed when Lexie choked on the sip of coffee she’d taken. She blotted at her T-shirt, and glowered at Mackenzie.

“No, we didn’t sleep together.” She paused before adding, “at least, not last night.”

Mackenzie thrust her fist high in the air. “I knew it! Back in Dallas, when you first saw him, there was this—spark.” She touched Lexie’s hand softly. “Why didn’t you ever tell me? We’ve been friends a long time, Lex. Told each other everything.”

Lexie refused to meet her eyes. “I don’t know. I never told anybody. It was only one time, one night. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t forget it—or him. And trust me, I tried.
